Brünhild

This is a original character design that started out as a class project, but transformed into a larger set of illustrations as I got into it more. Brünhild is based on the Valkyrie Shieldmaiden from Norse Mythology of the same name, and I have written a backstory for her explaining some of her wardrobe and weaponry, scroll down to read more about the character.

Brünhild's backstory...

Brünhild was born to Budli the Æsir and the sister of Atli. She was sent away however when she was very young to live in a place called Hlymdalir under King Heimir. When she is 12 her magical swan shirt, that was given to her by her father, is stolen from her by a rival King Agnar, and she is forced to swear loyalty to him, bound by the power of the shirt. She breaks this oath however, unwilling to see her memory of her father mistreated, and instead of intervening on Agnars behalf when he fights the champion of the Æsir, Hjálmgunnar, she takes the opportunity to slay Angar while he is distracted and take back her swan shirt. This angers Hjálmgunnar, who she also defeats using the power of her shirt, yet she does not escape without dire injuries and her swan shirt torn. The death of Hjálmgunnar sparks the ire of Odin as he had desired for him to be the victor, and so in retaliation, Odin tries to stick Brünhild with a sleep thorn as punishment. With the power of her shirt restored to her however, Brünhild manages to escape Odin and flees to exile in Midgard. Brünhild makes a way for herself on there, and eventually her fate leads her, as it should have through Odin’s curse, to find Sigurd, the man who knows no fear. Thanks to her escaping the gods however, she is not bound by Odin to marry him, and instead joins him on his conquest to stave off the giants of Jötunheim. Brünhild is a strong and cunning warrior who has used her power to evade the cruel tricks of fate imposed by the gods. And she has dedicated her life to defying Odin, though she struggles with not being able to ever return to her father’s house. In addition to her shirt, Brünhild wears an ancestral ring forged by the Sons of Ivaldi around her neck, it gives her no aid in combat among the men of Midgard and the Giants of Jötunheim, yet it reminds her of her home and of her parents, and sister Bekkhild. And so Brünhild walks the world, using the power of her shirt and ring, and the might of her sword, Niflhragir, to travel throughout the branches of Yggdrasil from Muspell to Niflheim and the Ginnungagap; battling all who might dare to oppose her. She slays without remorse and has become skilled at dodging Odin’s petty attempts at revenge, whilst never forgetting the reason for her exile. All with Sigurd, the equally spirited and stalwart man who she has come to love, by her side.
